Box Office Battle: ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ wins weekend with record debut

  1. "Box Office Battle" is The Fly's weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend's box office.

Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal's “Minions: The Rise of Gru’ won this weekend’s domestic box office with a $125.2M four-day opening. This includes $107M for the three days. Overseas, the film surpassed $86M on Sunday for a global total of $200M-plus. These numbers make “Minions: The Rise of Gru” debut one of the top starts ever at the domestic box office for an animated movie, not adjusted for inflation. The movie is a sequel to 2015’s “Minions” and the fifth entry in the “Despicable Me” franchise.

BOX OFFICE RUNNER-UPS: Paramount’s (PARA) “Top Gun: Maverick” placed number 2 with $32.5M for the long weekend. Behind it was Warner Bros. (WBD) “Elvis” with an estimated three-day total of $19M and $23.7M for the four days in its second outing. Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal's “Jurassic World Dominion” placed number 4 with a three-day gross of $15.7M and an estimated $19.2M for the four. Rounding out the top five, Universal’s “The Black Phone” earned $12.3M for the three days and $14.6M for the four-day weekend.
